Brand new machine that was working fine then randomly it changed the theme when I booted into a sort of 'basic' theme (white task bar, no see through windows etc)I've done and attempted many fixes and I still don't understand why it doesn't work. I've tried these two solutions:andThese solutions included registy changes, stopping/starting services, and force starting the aero theme. The closest I got seems to be when I went into:Control panel (category view) Find and fix problems (System and Security) Display Aero Desktop EffectsI follow through the wizard and let it do its thing and then I get an error window that pops up:Personalization - 'This theme can't be applied to the desktop. Try clicking a diffrent theme.' That's what I get from the wizard. What can I do? My drivers are all up to date, there are no viruses on the computer, directx is installed and updated, and the registry is all correct.EDIT:When I boot the computer, I get a notification stating that windows failed to communicate with the windows desktop services.
Double check the Windows 7 'Themes' Service is running. Some folks, including me, followed a performance tweak and were stuck with the Windows 7 toolbar being a white (Windows Classic). Altering the theme did not correct this. It turned out the Themes service was not automatic. If you have this problem, where Desktop (right-click) 'Personalize' 'Windows Color' showing only as Windows Classic).Run 'services.msc', ensure the 'Themes' service is Automatic (and Started). That is the Windows 7 default mode for this Service. Even if it is started and automatic, try restarting it.Then you can then select any Windows Aero theme and it will provide the toolbar transparency againHere's the interesting thing, I don't remember having altered the Themes service. My fault for doing this, but I had followed a tip, which I believe caused the issue. If you Right-click on Computer, Properties, left margin Advanced system settings, then Settings button in Performance section. On Visual Effects tab, Adjust for Best performance, you may end up with this issue once you Log Off or Restart. I don't recommend that option, or playing too much with de-selecting all but a few of the Custom options.Later, I realized I wanted my default Windows 7 Toolbar look back!
Aero troubleshooting and a Microsoft FixIt attempt did not find the problem. I went back to check ALL default Windows 7 Services and found the Themes service had been set away from Automatic. Hopefully, my learning the hard way may help you avoid going to far in this same way. You can try the tool. For me, the LogMeIn Mirror Driver was the culprit.
I uninstalled that, and also LogMeIn (which may not have been necessary to solve this), rebooted, and now the problem is fixed. I'm not sure whether I'd been running Aero okay before; under Personalization, the 'custom' color option brought up the retro XP-style color scheme modifier. After this fix, it brings up the newer one replete with the transparency options-I suppose that must mean Aero. Maybe there's a setting in LogMeIn that would have fixed this?–Sep 20 '13 at 23:06. Just had same problem. Themes services was already started and I restarted and did not fix. However, The Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service, altho it was Started already, I restarted it, and it fixed my problem instantly.
Taskbar icon peek and transparency restored.Note that control panelSystem and SecuritySystem - advanced system - Performance Settings - visual effects tab had Enable Aero Peek MISSING. It was not just un-checked, but missing entirely from the list.Re-starting Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service restored that option into that list (in checked state). I had Let Windows choose what's best for my computer radio button selected here before and after the problem and before and after the fix.EDIT: I got my hint from here.

July 30, 2013Do you like the cyan color theme in Windows Server 2012? No you don’t, it’s hideous.Microsoft removed the ability to customize the color scheme, so you’re stuck with that awful look right? The good news is you can export the Windows Classic theme from Windows 7. On your Windows 7 machine, right click the desktop and pick personalize. Under Basic and HIgh Contrast Themes, activate Windows Classic. Now scroll back up to My Themes.
Right click on your current theme and pick “Save theme for sharing”. Save it as classic.themepack (or whatever you want). On a Windows 2012 machine, double click the file. It will automatically be imported and set as your current theme. No more awful cyan! Now if anyone knows how to get rid of the ridiculous 8 pixel wide border, please let me know! Set the border padding reg key, it still affects the theme but there is no UI to control it now.You can also get back true classic theme, but you loose all metro UI such as logon screen, network switcher, nt security options, start screen etc.
Just enable autologon, rename dwm.exe, rename WindowsResources (so aero doesn’t load).I recommend penetwork to replace network ui.Also import Windows standard theme reg settings, & replace taskmgr.exe & tasker.exe.mui with Windows setup / winpe version (as it needs dwm). Link never die 100% disk.
This has been happening for a while now and despite searching the internet and trying numerous fixes out there nothing seems to be able to keep this from happening. It's not just while running a game. But many different rendering related programs will cause windows to change color schemes on its own for no rhyme or reason. GPU-z, 3DMark (any version), Unigine benchmarks, Games.
Windows 7 Stuck In Basic Color Scheme For Pink
Its just really annoying. My system is not running low on resources. None of the exe's have the 'disable windows desktop composition' checked in the compatibility tab. My page file is large enough. DWM just seems to turn off on its own. I would really like for this to not happen.
Is there any fix out there? I have what appears to be the same problem. Often the color scheme change to windows 7 when no particular programs are running.
I am not a gamer so the stuff I am running is primarily word processor, outlook, media player, etc. Pretty low level stuff, yet this has been happening on my system for over a year.
I can switch it back to aero theme and sometimes it will stick for a while, but as I did this morning, I switched it back to aero and within a minute it downgraded it to windows 7 basic again. Can anyone provide any solutions to this problem???
Hi i have a fairly new laptop with windows 7 (i can't remember which version), and i was wondering how to change the colors, if that makes sense. The laptop came installed with some default color scheme which i liked, but when i tried to watch a movie with Windows Media center it changed it to 'windows 7 basic'. It does this every time i use the program, but until now it has all ways automatically changed back. Any advice would be appreciated. Can we get your system specs so we know what hardware you have? Just keeps on being windows 7 basic theme. I liked it (before re-installing windows 7) where the close button was more rounded and if I hover over the the little icons down the bottom it shows the page (not the title). Sorry for.CustomizationWhen Running older applications, of course windows 7 switches from Aero to the Windows Basic Theme, that's completely understandable, but is there any way to change the colors of that temporary Basic Theme, so that it doesn't conflict so much with my Aero theme (my Aero theme is dark, The Basic, is.Themes and StylesOur SitesSite LinksAbout UsFind Us.
